Internet...

Digital technologies permeate our lives and make the walls of the built environment increasingly porous, no longer the hard boundary they once were when it comes to decisions about privacy. Data profiling, aggregation, analysis, and sharing are broad and hidden, making it harder than ever to constrain the flow of data about us. Cautioning that suffocating surveillance could lead to paralyzed dullness, Nissenbaum and Varnelis do not ask us to retreat from digital media but advance interventions like protest, policy changes, and re-design as possible counter-strategies.

It’s most likely just a Google employee testing the company’s new augmented reality glasses. On Wednesday, Google gave people 20/20 vision about a secret augmented-reality project called Project Glass. The glasses are the company’s first foray into wearable computing. The glasses are not yet ready for sale. Google will, however, be testing them in public. The vast majority of these companies have landed in Midtown South, within blocks of venture capital investors and veteran start-ups. The area’s affordable rent and popular restaurants and bars are a big draw. Many of the companies are working to use technology to reshape the city’s established industries, like retail, finance, health care and entertainment.
